This hotel is located on Chichijima Island in the Ogasawara Archipelago, approximately 1,000 kilometers south of Tokyo in the Pacific Ocean. The Ogasawara Archipelago features a subtropical climate with mild temperatures throughout the year. As an oceanic island that has never been connected to any continent, it is home to many endemic flora and fauna species found nowhere else in the world. In 2011, the Ogasawara Islands were designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The first human settlement on Ogasawara occurred in 1830, when five Caucasians including Nathaniel Savory and twenty-five Hawaiians from Oahu Island established a colony. The current hotel owner is a great-grandchild of Nathaniel Savory. The site of the hotel holds historical significance as the location where Nathaniel Savory first constructed an artificial dwelling on the Ogasawara Islands. The hotel owner operates the establishment with a strong desire for visitors to experience the nature, culinary culture, history, and traditions of Ogasawara, honoring the legacy of this historically important site passed down through generations.
The façade is designed with simplicity and elegance to serve as a canvas that highlights the abundant surrounding natural environment. The interior similarly pursues simplicity, featuring a predominantly white palette combined with natural tones that emphasize the textures of mortar and base materials, reflecting the relaxed atmosphere unique to the islands.
The facility consists of two buildings housing a total of 13 guest rooms, including single, twin, and traditional Japanese-style rooms. It offers a restaurant serving Ogasawara cuisine and a library that conveys the history of the archipelago. The long corridor in front of the guest rooms also functions as a gallery space. An adjacent building accommodates the owner’s family and staff, providing guests with a warm, family-run hospitality experience.
