A dental clinic renovated from a Kyoto machiya. Conscious of inheriting the layers of history accumulated over time and of creating the functions and structures required in the present using contemporary technology. An under-eaves space formed by reconstructing the street-facing eaves. A plan that guides inward by making use of a tsuboniwa (compact courtyard) and an inner garden. A vertical section that exposes the roof framing that had been concealed by the ceiling. At dusk, illuminated lighting reveals the roof framing along the street. We hope it becomes a streetscape that is at once nostalgic and new.
