Ganshoji Temple located in Tsurumi Ward, Osaka City. Replacement of a nursery on the temple grounds that has been in operation since 1945 (Shōwa 20). The nursery practices childcare based on Buddhist principles; as a nursery situated among Buddhist buildings such as the main hall, kuri (priest's living quarters), and belfry, we were conscious of giving it an appropriate presence befitting that context. A simple, large roof characteristic of Japanese architecture covers the building, and the deep eaves create semi-outdoor spaces that foster lively activities for the children and serve as a buffer between the temple and the nursery. We hope that the children will feel the school building as part of the temple, live their nursery lives with the Buddha close at hand, and grow up accordingly.
