Respecting the Kyoto machiya's composition of street eaves, tsuboniwa (small courtyard), and rear garden, and honoring details such as transoms, joinery, and tokobashira (alcove pillar), as well as the textures of materials and traces of daily life, new functions were introduced to sit alongside them. The sole opening pierced in the wall facing the street imparts a sense of renewed breath and invites people inside.
