Kuno House|Troom
This house is located in a villa community spread across the gentle slopes of Karuizawa. The clients, who live in Tokyo, wanted to create a vacation home that would serve as a base connecting their adult children and their families.
The site was undeveloped land bordered by untouched woodland to the southeast and a neighboring house close to the northwest. To keep the existing neighboring house out of sight while preserving a deep visual connection through to the woodland behind, the two buildings were carefully arranged in a ku-shaped configuration. By spanning the roof beams in the same direction across both buildings, the design creates an expansive spatial experience in which the scenery changes depending on where one is situated, despite the compact floor area of approximately 30 tsubo.
Antique stained glass from the client’s collection is placed throughout the house. Combined with the textures of solid-wood beams and brick tiles, it creates a design that is modern yet intended to endure across generations.
