Situated in the tranquil villa district of Karuizawa, this modest residence is designed for a retired couple and their cat. The site is gently divided by a softly flowing stream into a sloped area descending northward and a flat section, creating a serene environment where the subtle sounds of water and rustling trees offer profound peace.
In the design process, great care was taken to preserve the inherent tranquility of this place. The building was conceived to be understated and quietly nestled alongside the stream and surrounding trees, never asserting itself but rather harmonizing with the natural setting.
The approach path follows the slope downward via stairs, crosses a bridge, and guides visitors toward the entrance while allowing them to enjoy the evolving landscape along the stream. This pathway was deliberately shaped to respond to the topography of the site.
Ample time was devoted to the design, enabling a deep appreciation of the seasonal transformations unique to this location. The imagery was expanded with careful consideration of the views framed by the windows. Above all, the greatest joy lies in the client’s sharing of their daily experiences of the changing scenery, light, and shadows, conveying the profound emotional impact of their surroundings.
