Introducing A Courtyard House That Embraces Light, a custom-built home example by AtelierMA, a Architect / Design office in 2B Yanakada Building, 3-13-2 Tabata, Kita-ku, Tokyo

This two-story timber house stands in a residential neighborhood. To bring in natural light while gently screening the home from surrounding views, mortar walls are arranged around the site to create a courtyard-house configuration.

The walls extend continuously from the exterior landscaping through the courtyard and into the interior spaces, bringing depth and a sense of calm to the home as they receive the light. The softly shifting light throughout the day is reflected across the wall surfaces, creating quiet changes in the atmosphere of the residence.

The LDK opens broadly toward the courtyard, creating a design in which the exterior and interior are gently connected. While views are screened, the space remains open to the sky, creating a serene place that expands inward despite being situated in a residential neighborhood. Total floor area: 99.85 m² (30.2 tsubo)
