Introducing Residence in Matsugasaki, a custom-built home example by Naoko Matsumoto Architects & Associates, a Architect / Design office in 1304 Park Front Nakano Arai Yakushi, 5-5-10 Arai, Nakano-ku, Tokyo, Japan

Design commenced at the clients' request to rebuild the home to better suit their life as their children began to become independent. They sought a functional circulation, summer cooling through comfortable natural ventilation rather than air conditioning, a thermally comfortable environment in winter, and authentic tactile qualities achieved by using natural materials.

The site is located in a quiet, redeveloped residential district, facing a southwest road, while to the north there is a well-managed woodland on undeveloped land. Consequently, the house receives stable, pleasant daylight not only from the south but also from the north; the clients wished to enjoy the greenery of the woodland and to capture pleasant north–south cross-ventilation. While providing appropriate partitions to ensure privacy and the effectiveness of heating and cooling, we were also conscious of creating an overall unity in the home that conveys the presence of family members.
