The project originated when the owner, having spent his formative adolescent years on this very plot, decided to establish an independent residence here. Drawing from his memories of the area, a home with ample natural ventilation and abundant daylight was highly desired. Situated on a corner lot adjacent to a local elementary school’s commuting route, the site experiences significant traffic flow. Consequently, a straightforward south-facing orientation would disrupt the tranquility essential for daily living.
Moreover, strict urban planning regulations impose tight restrictions on the building coverage ratio. Following a negotiation process for the narrow site and leveraging a corner lot relaxation provision, the design maximizes site utilization by organizing the volume to envelop a central courtyard. The mass is divided into north and south wings: the south wing houses the living areas, while the north wing contains the bedrooms and workspace. This clear functional separation, mediated by the courtyard, prevents complete isolation of the spaces, allowing natural light penetration and cross ventilation to create a comfortable, interconnected environment.
The courtyard, accessible directly from both the living room and entrance hall, serves as an extension of the interior living space. It offers a private and sheltered outdoor area where one can pitch a tent, set up a pool, or simply relax away from prying eyes.
