Situated along the Sangi Railway Hokusei Line, where the iconic yellow trains run, this project began at the request of a married couple, both professional clarinetists active in orchestral performance, who sought to create a small-scale music hall.
Faced with the challenge of maximizing usable floor area within the residual space of their residential lot, the design successfully addresses spatial efficiency without compromising acoustic quality. Notably, the hall achieves an exceptional soundproofing performance of 50 decibels—an extraordinary feat for a timber-structured building in Japan.
The acoustic design was meticulously refined to enable not only intimate recitals inviting fellow musicians but also high-caliber music lessons. Upon completion, the clients hosted a mini concert, allowing attendees to fully appreciate the clarinet’s exquisite tonal qualities within the finely tuned acoustic environment.
