Located on a flagpole-shaped lot approximately five minutes from the Shonan Kugenuma coast, this residence accommodates a family of two adults and one child. Although the clients initially desired a two-story structure, we proposed a compact single-story dwelling to harmonize with the abundant natural surroundings and ensure comfortable living.
To invite the gentle southern breeze into the living room, the southern façade features fully operable wooden joinery. The flooring consists of solid chestnut wood integrated with underfloor heating. Additionally, the bathroom is constructed using traditional methods with Towada stone finishes. While considerable investment was allocated to premium materials for the flooring, fixtures, and bathroom, cost efficiency was achieved through a reduction in partition elements, and the walls and ceilings were finished with plywood made from Chinese lacquer trees, reflecting meticulous budget management.
A raised tatami alcove within the living room shifts the sightline towards the garden, offering a distinct experience of enjoyment. Furthermore, due to the sandy soil conditions, the foundation was elevated, allowing the incorporation of underfloor storage beneath the tatami area, which serves as practical seasonal storage.
On refreshing sunny weekends, this home becomes a vibrant hub where numerous friends gather after visiting the nearby sea, fostering deep social connections.
