This project involves a residence situated along a main thoroughfare leading to the Kurashiki Bikan Historical District. Although the site is generously sized, the primary themes addressed are the privacy from the busy tourist arterial road, the building’s presence and behavior within Kurashiki’s historic context, and the relationship with a comfortable living environment.
The predominantly single-story roof is lifted by a 35 cm horizontal slit from the ceiling plane, creating a light and airy impression; however, there are no other openings on the exterior side. The approach guides visitors along a central courtyard to the entrance, around which the living spaces are arranged in a wrapping plan.
