This is the home of a couple who relocated to this area after a period of urban living. While preserving the sensibilities they cultivated in the city, the design aims to provide a space where daily life can be experienced quietly within a calm environment.
The site's patterns of light and wind were carefully read, and openings and a layout were planned to allow interior and exterior to connect gently. An earthen-floored area connected to the living room and a generous opening beyond admit soft sunlight that envelops the living space. Light entering through the window beneath the suspended kitchen shelving changes slowly over time, lending a rich play of light and shadow to ordinary household moments.
A bench integrated with bookshelves is set beneath the stairs; a small window frames views of the outside and, together with the subdued light, conveys seasonal nuance, creating a low, enveloping place of calm.
A residence that retains an urban sensibility while quietly accompanying the rhythms of the countryside — "Urban Presence in the Countryside."
