The homeowners, a husband passionate about confectionery and a wife adept at organization, sought a simple, functional, and playful residence on a site just under 30 tsubo (approximately 100 square meters) to live with their two daughters.
The first floor functions as a public zone featuring a café-style earthen floor space that doubles as the entrance and hobby area, alongside a traditional Japanese-style room, and a private zone comprising the bedroom and wet areas. The design allows for minimal living solely on the first floor in the future.
On the south side, the second floor boasts a vaulted ceiling. The central staircase and storage boxes gently delineate the living and dining areas, which each connect seamlessly to semi-outdoor deck terraces, creating a harmonious blend of interior and exterior spaces.
The third floor, designed as a split level, includes a study equipped with a hammock, a balcony offering views of fireworks, and a children’s room fitted with built-in bookshelves. By maximizing the height restrictions, this level offers a variety of spatial experiences for diverse activities. Location: Asagiri City, Saitama Prefecture
Family composition: Couple (both in their 40s) and two children
Completion: December 2012
Structural system and scale: 3-storey timber construction (SE structural system)
Site area: 96.14 m² (29.08 tsubo)
Building footprint: 57.41 m² (17.37 tsubo)
Total floor area: 139.11 m² (42.08 tsubo)
Design and supervision: Archiplace Design Office
Structural design: NCN (N.C.N.)
Construction: NEAT Co., Ltd.
Remarks: All-electric residence; hydronic underfloor (radiant) heating (heat pump system); insulation-packed, ventilated construction method
