Introducing House in Okura, a custom-built home example by Atelier Cotocoto, a Architect / Design office in 4 Sekimachiminami, Nerima-ku, Tokyo

This residence was designed for a retired couple currently engaged in organic farming through natural circulation agriculture. After learning about their commitment to the labor-intensive natural farming methods and their philosophy toward craftsmanship, the goal was to create a home that embodies their principles, ideology, and lifestyle. Above all, the design sought to provide a gentle and restorative environment to soothe their bodies after long hours of fieldwork.

Internally, the layout features an efficient, streamlined circulation plan. The positioning of openings carefully frames views that connect the interior with the passage of time and seasonal changes. The spaces are enveloped in warm, tactile solid cedar wood and coated with diatomaceous earth plaster, known for its superior moisture absorption and release properties.

Externally, both the facade and the eaves ceiling utilize solid cedar timber treated with Wood Long Eco, allowing the natural materials to mature beautifully and age gracefully over time.

For the exterior openings, performance considerations led to the use of aluminum-resin hybrid sashes. To mitigate the industrial appearance of these elements, bespoke wooden pockets and lattice-style frames crafted from the same cedar material as the exterior walls were integrated, effectively harmonizing the fenestration with the natural aesthetic.

Thermal comfort is achieved through a rigorously designed building envelope meeting high-performance standards, complemented by a dehumidifying radiant cooling and heating system (PS HR-C). This system facilitates natural temperature modulation via radiation and convection, delivering consistent comfort throughout the year without reliance on conventional air conditioning.
