A home filled with the family’s hobbies, making the most of the view of the riverbank

This house is designed for a couple and their three children. The clients requested a workspace and a tatami area adjoining the living-dining-kitchen, an atelier, and a stainless-steel kitchen enclosed by mortar walls. Since the Tone River embankment extends across the southwestern side of the site, the plan was designed to take advantage of the view in that direction.

The LDK was positioned in the best location on the site, with the wet areas, walk-in closet, single-story entrance, and atelier connected in an L-shaped configuration. Bending the plan creates a garden protected from the road and parking area while bringing in light from the south. The wall on the west side of the LDK is also angled to broaden the view. Because the clients wanted the workspace to maintain a close relationship with the living room, the second-floor structure was made as thin as possible. The staircase connecting the two spaces also serves as a bookshelf, enabling them to be used as an integrated whole. Building type and scale: Private residence, two-story wooden structure
