The streetscape, where older houses are tightly sited along narrow roads, is gradually being transformed by new residences that introduce open spaces—setback gardens and parking areas—receding from the street. We aimed to bring a greater sense of openness to such a neighborhood. To relieve the feeling of enclosure, the building is articulated into two volumes: a lower mass facing the street and a taller mass set toward the rear of the site, separated by a courtyard. An approach sequence extending from the street into the site links the courtyard’s green vista with the public realm.
We intended the new residents to be connected with the street, to enliven the neighborhood, and to enjoy a rich, fulfilling lifestyle. That intention informed every aspect of the project, from the overall composition of the building down to the tactile treatment of surfaces and details.
