This residence is designed with multiple living spaces and gardens both inside and outside, creating a variety of atmospheres that offer distinct comfort zones. When it is hot, inhabitants can move to cooler areas; when cold, they can choose sunlit, warmer spots. At the same time, the design fosters a sense of connection among family members who may be spending time in different moods or locations—whether in separate rooms indoors, outside, or spaces separated by interior or exterior boundaries. What one senses in these moments might be a family member’s humming, a subtle fragrance teasing the senses, or a joyful expression. This home provides a spatial framework that allows individuals to engage in their own activities while still feeling an occasional, gentle connection with others.
The family has embraced and shaped these numerous interior and exterior spaces as their own, enjoying each unique setting. Throughout the day, family members exchange glances and intuitively perceive each other’s moods. They draw near when sensing a joyful atmosphere, or distance themselves when seeking focus and solitude.
In an era when reading, gaming, watching TV, working, attending tutoring, holding meetings, and communicating with friends are all accessible via mobile devices, spatial constraints have diminished. In such times, being with family means choosing one’s own comfort zone while remaining attuned to subtle family cues and the surrounding scenery. It requires an environment that encourages awareness and consideration. This was the spatial ideal we aimed to realize.
The name “House of the Elephant” was coined by the client’s daughter during a meeting when she saw the model of the large house. The name perfectly suited the generous and expansive atmosphere of the space, so we adopted it as is.
