Gojō, Nara Prefecture. This cake shop is a complete renovation of a materials yard building belonging to a timber merchant dealing in Yoshino cedar. Existing wood-grain steel cladding, vinyl canopies, signage and exposed piping were removed, and the exterior was reconfigured into a simple composition of two gabled volumes of different sizes with their eaves aligned. The smaller volume is fitted with removable fabric that covers the window—designed with future adaptability in mind—and serves as a large sign. Inside the larger volume, a concrete-block counter, chalkboard-painted walls and iron hardware were introduced with a cohesive approach to subordinate the awkwardness of the previous interior and to let the inherent qualities of Yoshino cedar inform the finished interior.
