This new residential project is situated in Shiroyama, a tranquil neighborhood in Odawara City, Kanagawa Prefecture. The site spans a generous 307 square meters (approximately 93 tsubo) and is topographically flat without any elevation differences. Although the location offers panoramic views overlooking the city of Odawara, access is constrained by a narrow and steeply inclined approach road. The entrance to the site is only about 1.8 meters wide, necessitating initial widening works before proceeding with the demolition of the existing structure.
Given the presence of a cliff on the western boundary adjacent to the neighboring lot, ensuring structural safety from potential landslides was paramount. To address this, the building was set back at a safe distance from the cliff and elevated on a high foundation to secure stability. Consequently, the residence was positioned at the center of the site. While many of the pre-existing garden trees were removed, the large persimmon tree located centrally was preserved after careful consideration. This tree serves not only as a natural screen from the street but also provides substantial shaded areas.
The exterior walls clad in Apitong wood and the accompanying wood deck—both crafted from the same material—create a harmonious dialogue with the retained persimmon tree. Inside, the design integrates views of the garden greenery through a double-height atrium and fixed windows in the living area, fostering openness and abundant natural light. This architectural feature establishes a gentle connection between the first and second floors while reinforcing the relationship between interior and exterior spaces.
The extensive use of wood, chosen for its tactile warmth and visual softness, both inside and outside the building, imparts a gentle and inviting ambiance to the home. Detached single-family residence / Two-story timber construction
Site area: 309.06 m²
Building footprint: 70.34 m² (21.27 tsubo)
Total floor area: 102.67 m² (31.05 tsubo)
Contractor: Yasuike Construction Industry Co., Ltd.
