Introducing Living Around a Square | Square Room, a custom-built home example by Yoshihiro Yamamoto Architects Associates, a Architect / Design office in 302, Zeniya Honpo Main Building, 14-6 Ishigatsujichō, Tennōji-ku, Osaka
Two units located on the top floor of a whole-building renovation.
Unit 401. A highly permeable circulation plan organized around the 'square' placed at the center of the room.
Consolidating services within a boxed core minimizes renovation costs while maximizing occupant flexibility.
Walls painted in situ, preserving the existing structural relief; floors are oak planks stained a smoke tone.
The traces imprinted on the walls are abstracted in white, creating room for interpretation.
The slightly compact Unit 402. The central service core is passable.
From a tunnel carved through a white, rectilinear box, access leads to storage, toilet, and bath/washbasin.
By centralizing the service core, east–west openings are utilized to their fullest extent.
Details that minimize direct junctions between materials.
In a whole-building renovation, service piping routes can be re-laid to accommodate changes in the floor plan.
Because piping and wiring are generally left exposed, routing was planned with care.

Two units located on the top floor of a whole-building renovation. The interiors, which had been remodeled multiple times, were fully stripped back to the raw concrete structure, and a compact square containing the kitchen, washbasin, bathroom, toilet, and storage was placed at the center. Without additional partitions or doors, the block creates blind corners in each quadrant, and varying conditions—existing windows, orientation, and the views beyond—give rise to distinct visual zones.
