The site is located on the outer edge of a new town, with a recently developed residential area on one side and rich natural surroundings and an old settlement on the other. The client wished to live openly with the surrounding greenery where possible, but was concerned about sightlines and noise from the two busy roads bordering the site. After exploring various plans, we adopted a court-house typology in which the rooms are linked like beads around a small courtyard, while also opening onto a large south-facing verandah. The resulting residence occupies an ambiguous in-between condition—neither completely closed nor completely open. When the entrance door is opened, the entry hall, courtyard, Japanese-style room, verandah and garden are conceived as a continuous spatial sequence.
