The site is located along Yuzo Street, which leads from Chigasaki Station toward the coastline. The primary challenge of this project was how to thoughtfully integrate elements of nature and culture throughout the building, creating a seamless flow and meaningful connections within the architectural composition. Additionally, the clients requested a residence that prioritized security while maintaining structural robustness.
Regarding the interior design, the senior generation desired a sophisticated and modern aesthetic, whereas the younger generation preferred a simple and natural style. There was also a need to address allergy concerns for the children.
At the heart of this home lies the courtyard. From the main house’s garden, sago palms, crape myrtle, and white magnolia were transplanted and linked through a wooden deck, connecting the two generations. The window heights and sizes were carefully tailored to each space, allowing the occupants to feel intimately connected to greenery, sky, and breeze. The courtyard also serves to delicately mediate the spatial relationship between the two households.
To ensure privacy and security, the building is arranged to encircle the courtyard completely. Windows facing the perimeter are minimized to the essential size needed for ventilation and daylighting, thoughtfully balancing security with comfort. This harmony of function and design fosters connections not only between people but also between humans and nature, and society at large.
The children’s rooms directly face the grandparents’ living room through the courtyard, fostering joyful interactions. Moreover, large windows in the children’s rooms overlook the courtyard, harnessing sunlight—nature’s best ally against allergies.
From virtually every corner of the house, the courtyard is visible, enabling the family to sense each other’s presence and movements, cultivating a warm and engaging living environment.
