Nishidaikaidō House is situated within a residential neighborhood in Ichinomiya. To the east of the site, across the street, there is a kindergarten, and the frontage road functions as a thoroughfare used by a diverse public.
The client requested that the character and activity of the kindergarten to the east not be perceptible from inside the house. In response we erected a continuous wall on the east side and avoided openings on that elevation; instead, we introduced a central courtyard and a small interior courtyard, creating gardens that remain invisible from the exterior.
Although the exterior reads as closed and introverted, once inside the entrance one encounters a sense of openness framed by the small courtyard and the central courtyard. The restrained façade is simple yet includes eaves where necessary to mitigate summer sun and rain.
From the living room, the privately enclosed courtyard brings nature into the interior, producing an ambience akin to a resort.
