House in Meguro|Troom
This house stands near a street lined with cherry trees. The site is long from east to west, with a depth nearly three times its frontage, making it difficult to secure sufficient natural light. We therefore placed the living room and children’s room—spaces used for long periods during the day—on the second floor, and designed clerestory windows to bring in light from above the roofs of the neighboring houses.
The area above the parking space, which projects all the way to the street, was designed as a spacious terrace. By keeping its height low, we created a relationship in which the view from the living room remains open while views from the street are screened. In spring, the cherry trees can be seen from the living-room sofa through the terrace.
On both the first and second floors, corridors run through the house from east to west, making use of the site’s considerable depth. The aim was to create a light, airy space through which sunlight and breezes can pass freely throughout the house.
