Introducing Residence in Ryugasaki, a custom-built home example by Naoko Matsumoto Architects & Associates, a Architect / Design office in 1304 Park Front Nakano Arai Yakushi, 5-5-10 Arai, Nakano-ku, Tokyo, Japan

This residence is primarily single-story, with only some children's rooms located on the second floor. With deep eaves and a detached Japanese-style room, the design expresses a Japanese-modern aesthetic.

Because the single-story portion has a large plan, and to avoid the central areas becoming deprived of sunlight as the plan extends inward, several courtyards were provided at different locations.

Planting is arranged within the courtyards so that sunlight reaches from multiple directions throughout the day, and natural cross-ventilation is achieved. The single-story roofline was kept in plan with the building so that it does not become taller than necessary.

The living room floor level is slightly lowered to create a space that feels closer to the ground. Meanwhile, the detached Japanese-style room has a slightly raised floor and a nure-en (wet veranda) from which the entire garden can be viewed. Structural scale: Wooden, two-story building
