The site is located approximately 100 meters north of National Route 2, on the east side of JR Ashiya Station, within a tranquil residential neighborhood that is shielded from the hustle and bustle of the highway. The streetscape is defined by relatively large residences, and this particular plot was occupied by a house built to the maximum allowable building coverage ratio.
In the course of renovation, the existing concrete podium structure, which accommodates an underground parking garage, was retained. The large two-story wooden structure above was dismantled, and in its place, a more modestly scaled two-story wooden addition was constructed.
To avoid an oppressive façade facing the street, the building’s volume was minimized, and the exterior wall along the road was angled to visually reduce the scale. The resulting spatial relief on the site created an ideal setting for the client, an avid horticulture enthusiast, to showcase their passion. The flourishing greenery enveloping the building will gradually cultivate a new, vibrant landscape within this neighborhood.
