Villa Luminous|A Villa of Light Overlooking the Sea|Atelier Mana
Onjuku, Chiba. In this place surrounded by a calm sea and abundant nature, we set out to create a vacation home where its residents could fully enjoy spending time with the ocean. The ever-changing horizon, the gentle sea breeze, and the shifting light of each season. By bringing the distinctive landscape of the site into the architecture, we envisioned a free and enriching passage of time, liberated from the routines of everyday life.
Beyond the expansive openings, an open and expansive space unfolds, drawing the eye toward the sea. While gently connecting the interior and exterior and creating a sense of unity with nature, the building is also dotted with a wide variety of spaces for enjoyment. Surfing in the sea, relaxing in the pool or Jacuzzi, working out in the gym, and immersing oneself in hobbies in the billiards room or audio space. In the evening, guests can raise a glass at the bar and converse with friends. This is a playful vacation home where each person’s time can freely intersect with that of others.
In the design, it was important to preserve a sense of calm and dignity throughout the space while accommodating these diverse ways of spending time. Open areas and quiet retreats, liveliness and stillness—each is gently connected to the others, creating a composition in which both time spent alone and time spent gathering with loved ones can be enjoyed naturally.
