Located in the western urban area of Saitama Prefecture, this project involves rebuilding a two-generation residence on a site that has been passed down through generations. The existing garden is densely populated with large trees, serving as a valuable remnant of greenery within the neighborhood. The design process carefully considered the utilization of this garden and the spatial relationship between the two households. The clients requested a single main entrance with the rest of the house fully separated into two independent living units, preservation of the wisteria trellis in the garden, and a built-in garage accommodating two vehicles. The approach was positioned along the less trafficked western road, where the entrance and garage are located, with a hall that branches off to each household. Both units were planned around living rooms that connect to the garden, utilizing the roof slope to create a central, open space. The exterior design employs a single-sloped large roof to impart a light and dynamic appearance, counterbalancing the building’s broad and voluminous form that might otherwise appear heavy. Additionally, to emphasize the building’s integration with the local context, eaves and ceilings are finished with solid Hinoki cypress boards sourced from the local Nishikawa timber. It is hoped that this home will allow the residents to relax comfortably as a family while experiencing the changing scenery of the garden.
