Introducing Irori Detached Retreat, a custom-built home example by Tatsumi Negishi Architectural Studio, a Architect / Design office in 532-5 Nakazawa, Hidaka City, Saitama Prefecture, Japan

Situated on a corner of a narrow, flagpole-shaped lot adjoining the main residence, this detached annex serves as a space for enjoying hobbies, savoring drinks, and hosting home parties. The 40-square-meter single-story structure comprises a wooden-floor area designed for reclining, a dirt-floored hearth room featuring an irori (traditional sunken hearth), and an adjoining terrace equipped for open-fire experiences.

When the three large wooden sliding windows are fully retracted into the walls, the boundary between the terrace and the irori space—paved with Ōya stone—disappears, seamlessly blending interior and exterior environments. As the hearth fire burns and music fills the air, an atmosphere rich with nostalgic warmth permeates the space. This annex creates a tranquil retreat that makes one forget the urban surroundings.
