A very compact residence designed for a single adult on a generous suburban plot. To achieve efficient circulation and sufficient storage, a large consolidated volume was created to accommodate daily activities—sleeping, dining, working, and recreation—and its character is softly articulated with curtains. Adjoining this are a servant space containing the wet areas and closets, and a guest room intended for visitors or potential future cohabitation with parents. The resulting building is composed of three overlapping boxes—large, medium, and small—placed near the center of the site to mediate the surrounding heterogeneous context. With a total floor area of 20 tsubo and the volumetric expression of one-and-a-half storeys in a single-storey plan, the house employs a high-performance, airtight and highly insulated envelope, a façade with few openings, and is set back significantly from neighboring properties—an arrangement that suggests a possible model for suburban living going forward.
