Introducing Seiseki-Sakuragaoka House, a custom-built home example by Takayoshi Nakamura Architects & Associates, a Architect / Design office in 4-26-27 Utsukushigaoka, Aoba-ku, Yokohama, Kanagawa

A garage house set on a hilltop with expansive views in Seiseki-Sakuragaoka, Tama City.
Located at the top of a slope also known as the setting of a popular anime, the house enjoys exceptionally fine views. As its name suggests, the area is home to many cherry trees, including a magnificent one directly in front of the site. The living room is placed on the second floor, with a courtyard-style deck, allowing the residents to enjoy the views while maintaining privacy. As this is a two-generation residence for an extended family living together, space has also been provided for a home elevator to be installed if needed, allowing the house to adapt flexibly to the family’s future needs. By positioning the courtyard-style deck between the two households, the design creates a comfortable sense of distance for both the parents’ generation, who spend much of their time at home, and the younger generation, who are in the midst of their working lives.

As the couple work in publishing, the house includes a shared family library, as well as a study for each of them that also serves as a workspace and hobby room. In addition to a built-in garage with an overhead sectional door and an open-air garage whose deck serves as a roof and entrance approach, parking space for guests has also been provided. Timber is used extensively both inside and outside the building, while plaster finishes and Ōya stone cladding have been introduced in selected areas as accents to avoid a monotonous appearance. The design also allows the residents to enjoy their gardening hobby, with planting planned to provide screening as well. We hope the house will become a local landmark while maintaining a comfortably serene atmosphere. Structure: Two-story timber post-and-beam construction
