By chance we had the opportunity to design and build the I residence in Fukuoka. The house is full of notable features such as a brick-built built-in garage and an open kitchen, but the client is especially fond of the view of the courtyard from inside.
The reason Aitofus has used wooden window sashes since its founding, besides their excellent thermal insulation and airtightness performance, is their pleasing aesthetic quality; the landscape framed by the sash feels rendered more fresh and vivid.
Being curtainless allows the occupants to enjoy this view at all times—truly a “life connected to the garden.” Visitors are often surprised by the strong sense of unity between garden and interior.
In summer an awning/tarp was provided so the terrace is more usable while preventing direct sunlight (and heat) from entering the house. The design’s attention to sun control, down to eaves and tarps, significantly elevates the quality of living.
