- The first time I traveled to Scandinavia, while walking through a residential neighborhood in Copenhagen, there was an unforgettable scene I saw through a window.
At dusk, I happened to notice a house. A candle burned on the windowsill, and on the dining table that I glimpsed from there, a pendant light hung at about eye level, emitting a soft glow.
An interior of nuanced shadows. Light only where it was needed, and only as much as necessary… It seemed as if the darkness of the night itself was being enjoyed, and the everyday scene of a family preparing dinner appeared to embody a relaxed abundance and looked very happy.
Later, I wondered whether I had been captivated simply by the lighting design. I discovered that the reason was not only its visual comfort but that it also had a medical basis.
"Less is more" — a famous phrase left by the modern architecture master Mies van der Rohe — also resonates with Laozi's saying, "Those who know contentment are rich." My journey through Scandinavia was a valuable experience in which I most viscerally felt these meanings.
Organic, beautiful Scandinavian design is strongly influenced by lifestyle and thought; the idea that "beauty enriches life" is deeply rooted in people's minds and contributes to present-day well-being.
At AITOHUS, by taking Scandinavia — with its progressive thinking about living environments — as a model, we have rediscovered the excellence of Japan's traditional wooden architecture: the tradition of light-colored timber, simplicity, and a love of nature. By identifying affinities and commonalities with Scandinavian design, we have continuously pursued our own distinctive style and approach to homebuilding.
A house that existed nowhere in Scandinavia or Japan. Yet a house where anyone can feel comfort and abundance. That is the kind of home AITOHUS aims to create. - Location: 6-6-1 Otsukanishi, Asaminami Ward, Hiroshima City, Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan
