Introducing Dwelling of Drummer, a custom-built home example by JYU ARCHITECT, a Architect / Design office in 2-19-19 Nakane, Meguro-ku, Tokyo

This is a satellite residence with an integrated drum studio, sited on an 8‑tsubo plot (approximately 26.4 m²). The semi‑basement reinforced concrete volume houses a high‑ceilinged, professionally soundproofed studio of less than six tatami mats in plan (under ~9.7 m²). Including the acoustic layers, the wall, floor and ceiling assemblies measure approximately 45 cm, 48 cm and 57 cm in thickness respectively; these constructions prevent the transmission of low‑frequency energy and impact vibration to the exterior while providing favourable reverberation characteristics for performance.

The timber upper floor is organised in response to its context: the relaxation area is afforded a window that frames adjacent greenery (a borrowed landscape), while the workspace is given a window with an unobstructed outlook. As a result, the compact 8.5‑tatami living area achieves a quality of space that belies its size.

A deliberate change of level in the floor allows the counter to function both as a seated work surface and as informal seating; the step itself serves as seating and creates a variety of loci that feel akin to places in a natural environment, offering different spatial conditions according to mood. That same stepped geometry also helps to diffuse reflected sound from the studio below, further improving the acoustic environment. With the drum energy effectively controlled, the studio accommodates vocal performance and most other instruments. The client’s ambitions are distilled into this tightly constrained footprint.
