Modern Japanese-Style Residence|Introduction to Architecture Firms|A Home Inheriting Japanese Aesthetic Sensibilities in the Contemporary Era
Author: Qurasuki Editorial Department
A Wa-modern residence fuses the traditional Japanese sense of beauty — the tactile qualities of materials, the subtle play of light and shadow, and the value of negative space — with contemporary lifestyles and construction techniques. The soft illumination filtered through shoji screens, the texture of earthen and plaster walls and washi paper, and the detailing of latticework and engawa (veranda) are design elements that demand both the designer’s aesthetic sensitivity and technical expertise when woven into modern interiors. To create dwellings that endure beyond trends and are loved across generations requires a profound respect for and understanding of Japan’s architectural culture. Here we introduce an architectural practice that contemporaneously integrates the spirit of Wa into modern design.
