The chashitsu (tea room) is a special space in which Japanese aesthetic sensibilities and spatial philosophy are concentrated. Elements such as the nijiriguchi (crawl-in entrance), tokonoma (alcove), the placement of windows and the way light is admitted, and the choice of materials demand a deep understanding of traditional tea ceremony protocols in tea-room design. When integrating a tea room into a contemporary residence, major design challenges include coordinating circulation with the living areas and creating a serene environment appropriate to the spirit of chanoyu. Here we introduce architectural practices that combine a thorough knowledge of Japanese traditional culture with contemporary architectural expertise.
